Fan Belts Don't Last Forever

After retirement, I bought a big motor coach, and I traveled nearby the country to every single city in the United States. Yes, I was on the road for seven years. I can't tell you how many times I stopped over on the side of the road for motorists who had cars which had been broken down, only to find they had a broken fan belt. Yes, something so easy can cause your car to overheat, your alternator to not payment your battery, and depending on the make and model forestall your car from running at all.

Fan Belts Don't Last Forever

Now then, just so this doesn't happen to you on the side of the road on a dark highway, or perhaps in the middle of nowhere with your family, I have some recommendations, some information, and a minuscule bit of guidance too. First, 80% of the fan belts fail in the middle of 40,000 and 140,000 miles, and most of those fail in the middle of 60,000 and 110,000 miles. So, if you are lucky to be driving your car after 60,000 miles without replacing the fan belt, I wouldn't push it if I were you.

There are a number of good companies that make fan belts, one is Dayco, and other one I'm sure you've heard of; Goodyear. Do you need to buy genuine branded belts which match the make of your car from the dealership? No, you don't, and you will not void your warranty if you buy aftermarket belts as long as they are of the allowable type and accurately cross-reference the genuine part or original fan belt.

Now then, if you are at an oil turn firm and they are changing your oil, and they ask you if you want to replace the fan belt, you may wish to consider this, especially if your car has 70,000+ miles on it or since you put on the last fan belt. If your car only has 30,000 or 40,000 miles, and it isn't squeaking or squealing occasionally, you probably don't need to replace it yet, and the oil turn firm is probably just trying to up-sell you. Nevertheless if you live in a very hot region of our country, or a very cold one, these belts may not last as long as you think.

If you live in a harsh weathered environment you may wish to turn or belts every 50,000 or 60,000 miles. You see, I don't wish to see you on the side of the road. It's not that I don't wish to stop and help you, I will gladly do that. But I'm not the only someone driving down the highway, and you can't be too specific these days. Safe your house and take a look at those fan belts. Please consider all this and think on it.
